ActOut presents Marc Acito's Birds of a Feather, directed by Marty Wayman.
Born in 1987 Roy and Silo are chinstrap penguins who were a same-sex male pair in New York City's Central Park Zoo. They were noted by staff at the zoo in 1998 to be performing mating rituals, although no actual sexual acts were witnessed. In 1999 it was noted that they were attempting to hatch a rock as if it were an egg.
This inspired zoo-keepers to give them an egg from another pair of penguins who could not hatch it, resulting in the couple raising a chick which was named Tango.
In 2005, they were the subject of a widely contested children's book, And Tango Makes Three, by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson. The book, temporarily pulled from school bookshelves in Loudoun County, became one of the most banned books in the US.
Tango herself formed a same-sex relationship with another female penguin. Like many couples, Roy and Silo drifted apart after several years, and in 2005 Silo paired with a female penguin called Scrappy. The practice of allowing same-sex penguin couples to adopt eggs has been repeated in other zoos around the world.

Over the past 13 years, Graeme has performed at Studio Players, Actors Guild and Woodford County Theaters, but this is his maiden voyage with ActOut. He is very excited to be able to work and play with such a talented cast and crew.
In his spare time, he delivers mail for the United States Postal Service and spends every moment he can with his beautiful wife Lori and wonderful daughters Jami and Hayli.

She was hand sewing at four years old and studied sewing, design, and pattern drafting at a small private college in Colorado. Jeanie started to create costumes for theatre with other drama moms at Morton Middle School, she has gone on to enjoy working with many of the local theatres, schools, a little stint with opera, and three years of film. Having costumed ActOut Theater’s readings last summer, when asked if she might be interested in working for them again she said yes immediately- without even seeing the script. Fortunately, the script is really awesome! And the best part, as always, is getting to do something she loves in creative collaboration with the amazing, talented people in the Bluegrass area and beyond.
It's hard to believe that twenty years have passed! I'm amazed and grateful to be a part of ActOut, which allows me to collaborate with so many incredible individuals like those involved in tonight's presentation. Their generosity and talent in supporting ActOut's mission leave me feeling humbled and deeply thankful. And, of course, a huge thank you to our audience for your continued support and enthusiasm for our theatrical experiences. Your support means the world to us. Lastly, a special shoutout to our amazing sponsor KY for KY - you all rock! I also want to take a moment to remember our dear friend and former director, Homer Tracy. His contributions to ActOut as a professor of Music Theatre at E.K.U. and director of eight plays will always be remembered fondly. We miss you, Homer.
