It's 1956 and the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein has its annual quiche breakfast. The normally idyllic gathering, where the motto is "no men, no meat, all manners," is upended when the Society's matriarchs must confront the startling revelation that an atom bomb may be falling on their fair city. As fears are confronted and confessions fly, the chipper ladies stay firm in their commitment that the quiche is a mighty thing and that one must "respect the egg."
Terry Mullins Founding Member and Executive Producer
Presented by special arrangements with CONCORD THEATRICALS
Welcome to 1956 and this year's eagerly awaited Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisterhood of Gertrude Stein's Quiche Breakfast! Will YOURS be the winning quiche this year? Friendship, love and loss, sacrifice, enthusiasm, and quiche are packed into the next hour and a half as you meet the officers and hear their stories.
It takes something explosive to change their world. As they edge out of tightly closed closets, they look to the future with optimism for a better world.
The women in 5 Lesbians would be astounded at the progress the LGBTQIA+ community has made since 1956; they would be both astounded and angry that people are trying to take away our rights. Still.
I hope when you leave tonight that you have had a good time with a lot of laughter, but you are optimistic about the future. These five sisters are going to change the world (in a lady-like fashion) and we can too.
Respect the Egg,
Marty Isaacs Wayman
Marty Isaacs Wayman is a Board Member and Director for ActOut Theatre Group and is so excited to directing 5 LESBIANS EATING A QUICHE during PRIDE MONTH! It has been nothing but fun for everyone involved. Previous shows directed for ActOut include BIRDS OF A FEATHER, and last season’s THE NORMAL HEART. Marty has been active with most of the theatre companies in Central Kentucky, and among recent shows directed are Nunsense, Leading Ladies, A Tuna Christmas, and often has taken part in the delightful 10 Minute Play Festival. Educated at Wittenberg University, and Northwestern University, Marty has an MFA with a focus on directing. If she was going to do it all over again, she would get major in lighting design! The mother of three sons, she is the widow of beloved Lexington/Frankfort/ Versailles area actor Rick Wayman. She’s 66 years old, and no longer cares who knows it :-) Marty thanks her cast, crew, friends, and family for being loving and supporting! She dedicated this production to her late friend Mike Thomas, who knew from funny!!

Carmen Wampler-Collins (she/her/hers) is delighted to make her ActOut Theatre Group debut, as well as her Lexington theater debut as Lulie Stanwyck in 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche. Carmen was a theater major at Smith College some years ago, but has had a long break from the stage, staying busy in nonprofit development and leadership, LGBTQIA+ activism, and raising a family. You may know Carmen as the Executive Director of the Lexington Pride Center and Festival. As a lesbian herself, Carmen was enticed to audition for this show because of its humor and its focus on the bonds between women. Carmen says, “Good lesbian representation in stories is so important and often hard to find. I wanted to be a part of this show that puts us front and center, but that is also hysterical regardless of your gender or sexual identity! As much as this is a quirky, somewhat absurd show, it has some genuine moments of joy, and I think our world and community really need that right now. I’m so happy to be a part of it.” Carmen shares her life with her spouse of 28 years, Shannon Wampler-Collins, their adult sons Evan and Jesse, and their 3 cats.

As one of the two remaining founding members, I can't believe it's been 25 years already! Thank you very much, Lexington! It has been an honor working with ActOut and meeting and collaborating with exceptional individuals. This includes everyone involved in this evening's presentation. My deepest gratitude goes out to each of these gifted individuals for their generosity in supporting ActOut's mission. It is my pleasure to extend a huge thank you to our audience for their unwavering support of our pursuit to deliver top-notch theatrical experiences. Your help is forever appreciated. With very special thanks to my husband, Terry Mullins, and in memory of our dear friend, Homer Tracy, I hope you enjoy our 25th-anniversary production, Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche.
Costuming productions for ActOut Theatre Group started with Marcus Roland asking her to costume Standing on Ceremony. Birds of a Feather followed, then Boys in the Band, Wrinkles, and the Normal Heart. Now we have Five Lesbians Eating a Quiche. She supposes it really started a long time ago back in 1998, when a very charismatic Episcopal priest, The Rev. Christopher Platt, told this costumer – who was not a costumer, but only a seamstress then - he was working with a group to start feeding people living with HIV/AIDS. They were going to call it Movable Feast Lexington. He said he thought some people believed the idea was too unconventional and was raising some eyebrows, but she believed he rather reveled in the controversy. Right there her heart added this act of caring, and she has been involved in some way since that time. When she found out ActOut supported Movable Feast she was in – even more than before. Hanging out with the coolest theater folk and stitching costumes is a bonus when one is supporting people you loved, love, and those you have yet to meet to love. In all the fun of bringing back 1950’s costumes to the stage, it is still all about love.
Tommy Gatton has been building things for theaters for almost 20 years. He has appeared on stage for Act Out in the past, but this is his first set for the company. Apart from acting and set building, Tommy also enjoys designing sound and directing. He’d like to thank his family for letting him shut himself in the garage to build this these past few weeks.
Kathy Jones is delighted to get to be part of Act Out once again. She has been enjoying performing in shows, concerts, commercials, and training films in Georgia, Missouri, and many Kentucky theatre groups, being stage manager, propmaster, set builder, seamstress, house manager since 1966, as well as being on the board for Woodford 1997 to 2007 . Thanks always goes to Greg, her husband of 43+ years, her two wonderful kids and their spouses for their support and encouragement. Greg 'Docta' Jones has been involved in a few stage productions hereabouts, one way or another, for a while now.
